Dave,
About 6 months ago, Commodore published a list of products that
they said would be available in the last quarter of '89. These were
"announced" vs "technology previews" products.
Anyway, among them was the A2090B, the 1/2 slot card to make an
A2090 work as an autoboot HD controller.
I've yet to see this product on the market…can you fill me (us)
in on CBM's plans for the A2090B?

There is a company Called CENTAUR that Sells a Card that will do just that
it's called CSI 6100 List for about 119.95 I have seen it listed on a Mail
order Catalog "Abel Supply" for 84.37. Give them a call and see if they
have them instock sounds like a good price.

I believe it is out, but I'm not sure. It might be just that it isn't
being stocked by most people.

The 2090B seems to have evolved into the 2091, which, as you probably know,
uses only about 1/3 of the card for circuitry, leaving room to mount the
hard drive right on the card.
If I can find out anything else about the 2090B, I'll be sure to let you
know.

Curious – my new computer has the 1091, but they still put the drive in the
df1: bay. Wonder why? I'd really have liked that bay for another floppy!

Of course, I could do that – but I still wonder why they are shipping the
card/drive combination with the card in the df1: bay. THAT was my
question.

Obviously it's done that way just to be difficult, no just kidding. The way
it's shipped makes 100% good sence, becuase of the way UPS and APA handle
things (C= shipping companies), the drive is more secure in the drive bay
than on the card, wich might break if, nay when it get tossed, bashed, and
bounced.

Maybe because the person that intalled the drive didn't know that the 2091
was going to be used???? ::grin::
Either that or they used a 2091 instead of a 2091/40, which would have been
simpler.
Doesn't take much time to move the drive from the DF1: bay to the 2091
should you want to install another floppy. I just did that on my machine,
but I don't have a 2091. Have to find someplace else to put the hard drive
now.

This was one of the Educational bundles, Dave. Seems to me that Commodore
should be putting them on the card if they can go that way. I do hope they
change.

Well, I have two Amiga's, a 2000 with a GVP/Quantum 105s Hard Card, and a
2500/030 which I swapped out the 40 megger for a 100 megger, except that I
located the replacemet drive in one of the 3.5" bays simly because I'm
starting to be of the opinion that mounting drives directly to the card
is'nt such a good idea, after I recently burned up an EPROM on a Quantum
drive. I suspect heat build up (Quantum PCB's do run hot, btw) was the
cause after I noticed so blistering on the PCB coating directly underneath
the EPROM socket.
I would think most hard drive users probably don't really need a second
3.5" floppy drive anyway, so the best place for a 3.5" HD would be right
where Commodre instals them.At least they left the option open to the
user…
When you do all of the disk copying for a club with two hundred or more
members, you really do need more floppy drives, though, Rick. And I do
that every month – have done it for years.

Would you believe that I have never even had to realign a drive in my
Amigas? Not since 1985, and most of that time I have had just two floppies
to work with. Have three now, and would have four if that second 3 1/2"
slot were not filled with my HD.
Now back in the 1541 days, I was constantly realigning. The old 4040s were
really reliable, though.

I have found this to be a puzzle for me too. When I first saw the 2091
it looked just like the GVP card so I gave them a call and they said that
one of the engineers designed the 2091 for CBM Donald Y.

One of the people involved in the development of the A590/2091 has
since left CBM and now works for GVP. That is the only link between the two
products that I know of.

If the 2091 allows for the HD to be mounted, why are the 2500s still
being shipped with the HD taking up a drive bay?

Found out the story on the 2091 equipped 2000HDs and 2500s that have the
hard drive mounted in the drive bay.
When the 2091 came into production, they went back and replaced all the
2090As with 2091s in the on-hand stock. Once they were completed, all
furter production units got the 2091 with the hard drive mounted on the
card.

I just recently purchased a 2091. While calling around for prices, one
computer company (which I am sure everyone here would know if I mentioned
their name) told me that in no uncertain terms would a hard drive fit on a
2091 controller. I would have to mount it in the bay.
Of course, I now do have an 80 meg Quantum mounted on the 2091 and a
totally empty bay.

Humm…the 2090B was supposed to be an inexpensive upgrade to the
2090…to allow it to work like a 2090a. The 2091 is a whole new
controller and significantly more expensive.
I'd appreciate it if you could check deeper and see what really
happened with the 2090b.

Got the scoop on the 2090B. It was a sandwich board addition to the 2090.
Unfortunately, it never worked correctly, so it was dropped.
