I'm looking for the best method of transfering files between an Amiga & a
clone. I've tried various terminal combinations, some of which work better
than others, but don't offer the speed or flexability I require. I've also
used Cross-Dos, but it limits me to files ler than 720K.
I would like to find a product similar to LapLink or the Bridge, which
would allow me to transfer multiple files at high speed between machines.

Of course, if you have a Bridgeboard, you should be able to use Laplink or
the like between Amiga and a clone. But then you wouldn't necessarily need
the clone. (I'm thinking in terms of AREADing an AmigaDos file, then
transferring via the Bridgeboard and a Laplink-type utility. Presumably
one could use the slower but cheap Transformer software to do this, too).
I considered the Bridgeboard, but I didn't think 8 MHZ was fast enough, not
when I could buy a 16 MHZ colour system for nearly the same price. Although
there have been times I regret having two boxes and all the associated
cabling sprawled over my desk. You would be surprised at the number of
times I have found myself typing away on the wrong keyboard and wondering
what the hell was wrong with my PC. 🙂
I never thought about using the transformer, an interesting idea. I imagine
it would be slow.

You could also buy a 2088 bridgeboard (8088, 4.77 mhz) and adding a 386
accellerator card to it. I have the 2088 and so far havn't added a speedup
card (although I havn't used it for many proccessor intensive apps yet).
These days 2088's are getting very cheap (I paid $400.00 for mine) and the
speedup cards arn't that expensive either.

Yes, the Transformer (if you can still find it) only runs at about 3 Mhz,
if that, but that shouldn't be noticeable for system tasks like file
transfers.
Also, Transformer goes for cheap these days.

Trouble is that Transformer has lots of problems addressing the RS232 port,
talk about SLOW!!!

For large files, using term programs and a null modem cable seem to be the
best bet. Are you able to get them up to high write speeds? i.e. 9600 or
better?
(You can set that on your Amiga through preferences. Then you just tell
the term program what speed to use.)

We are confronting the same problem, between a Compaq w/TARGA and our Amiga
1000. We have been transferring thru a null modem at 9600 Baud. Any
better options that don't cost a fortune?
Yes, I tried the null modem cable between the Amiga and my clone. I found
that ProComm offered the best control, but would not work above 9600 baud.
I finally settled on using Telix with a host script. It's lets me connect
at 19,200 and gives me limited control over the IBM. I don't understand why
I can't connect at 38,400 though, as Telix works fine on my HST at 38,400.
I was using JRComm on the Amiga side.
The whole process is a little painful at the moment, as I only have one
monitor and no switch box. I was actually hoping that someone would have
written a device driver that would let me copy files to the clone using the
serial port. I'm sure that I could do much better than 19,200 if there were
less overhead.
