I've had my amiga 500 for about one month now and have a few problems. One
of imary uses for my amiga is word processing. I use excellence with a
deskjet plus printer. The printer itself is fabulous, capable of 300 dpi
output, but that is only possible when using the printer's internal font.
When I use one of excellence's fonts, I get output that looks worse than a
9 pin printer. I shelled out 500 bucks for this printer and I'm not really
pleased with the results I'm getting. Are there any programs out there that
will give me 300 dpi output using the computer's fonts? My second question
is about workbench. I bought my amiga 500 used and it came with the 1.2
roms. I know that now the amigas use the 1.3 roms. Will this make a
difference in software compatibility? If so, what do I do to upgrade it?

I upgraded mine to 1.3 a little while ago and havent had any < knock on
wood >. Got the rom for about $30 and poped it in. I would recommend the
upgrade, the machine is a little more solid.

Do you mean that the printed characters are jagged-looking? You may be
getting 300 dpi output, and still have "jaggies." That's not the printer's
fault, or the software's. The fonts are bitmapped, and no matter what the
resolution will still look jagged.
On the other hand, you aren't far from a solution. In order to get the
crisp, nicely-curved characters I think you're looking for, you need to use
excellence's PostScript fonts. They'll still print jagged on the DeskJet+
which is a non-PostScript printer unless you use software or hardware to
turn it into a PostScript clone.
My solution is to use an inexpensive program called PixelScript. It's a
little slow, depending upon the number of fonts per page, but you'll get
beautiful output. For long documents, the DeskJet+ has a number of font
cartridges available. But for shorter documents, PixelScript is an elegant
solution, and I understand it works fine with excellence! (although I am by
no means a fan of that word processor).
As for 1.2 and 1.3 software compatibility, I have 1.2 in my 500, and 1.3 in
my 2000, I've encountered no compatibility problems. Your dealer can
upgrade your roms for you, or if you like poking around inside computers,
you can do it yourself. It's not very expensive either way.
