Fred; I have only been online since June. But I will look through the issues I have. Thanks. Dennis
Steven; Jeff is not on CIS yet. He may be soon, but for now, you will need to use U.S. Mail to send him any requests for back issues of C.A.N. His address is Jeff Glaze 6940 Roswell Road Atlanta GA 30328 Dennis (A C.A.N. subscriber, and friend)
Joe; I wasn't aware that billing time did not include changeing from one forum to another. I had noticed that, and was a little bit concerned, but not much. I do use ATO, and have figured a lot of it out. So now it was just what is the best…
Don; Thanks for replying. I have only had one situation where the clock was ticking and nothing was moving. And that was at 2400 baud. I have been trying each lately, and if things are moving, 9600 is probably best. Thanks. Dennis
John; Thanks for clarifying what is what on the Graphite video cards. I didn't know how to find that out. Now all I have to do is decide which one to buy. 🙂 Dennis
Steven; Here is the information. If you want previous issues, you will have to ask Jeff. I don't know what his policies about that are. "The Computer Animators News, or C.A.N. for short, is an animated on disk publication that is available to anyone (for now) for free! Simply send…
Ang; The Matrox MGA sounds like a great board. Dennis
Ang; I don't have a VL-bus MB. Maybe next year. Maybe sooner. I will keep your comments in mind. I don't have a frame buffer at all, so I need a good hi-res card. Dennis
#Best CI$ connect speed?
Message #55300
I just purchased a 14,400 baud modem and was wondering if it is cheaper to get threads from the forum in 9600 baud, or 2400 baud. Since 9600 baud costs twice as much, but goes four times as fast, it should be cheaper, but it seems that a lot of…
Merlin G Farmer; Thanks for jumping in. I'm glad you did. Sometimes I find myself in "tunnel-vision" mode and need to be snapped out of it. In my looking around, even at motherboards, it seems that there are so many to choose from, and the prices vary so much. A…
Martin; Thanks for your reply to the MGA cards. I was wondering if this was in competition with the Targa boards. If so, then maybe it is not too expensive. There is an option for an output to tape directly from the card. Dennis
Greg; Thanks for mentioning about the 2 megs of ram for Graphite. I believe 3DS R3 is set up standard for 800×600 for rendering and 640×480 for the materials editor. So I definitely want that capability. I appreciate your help. In looking through the catalogs, it appears that there may…
Ang; I was looking at that board. I got some specs on it and it sounds good, but I haven't heard much talk about it on the board. I believe that some were talking about a different version or model that had limited 3DS drivers. I was hoping that someone…
Alan; Thanks for responding. I was thinking of getting a less expensive board at this time in hopes of upgrading to a Local Bus Computer within a year. So I particularly like the sound of a $79.00 board. Dennis
John; Ok. Confirmation # 2. Sounds like the Graphite is the one for me. Thanks for your input. Dennis
Greg; Did you get one or two megs of ram on the board? I think I would get two megs (unless they have more) to avoid some limitations. Thanks. Dennis
Both files, CAN8A.zip and CAN8B.zip have been uploaded to library 9. For a description of what these are and a less expensive way to get the files, see the notes from this section #55213 or 55214. Dennis

See note in Animator Pro topic.
I just got a new U.S. Robotics 14.4 Sportster and was going to upload these files, but am having trouble getting it to respond from Procomm Plus. It works fine in Autosig, but I don't know how to upload from Autosig. So I will get them uploaded ASAP. Dennis

John; How does the Graphite work for 3D Studio. I was looking at that card tonight at Fry's Electronics. It looked good, but didn't say anything about drivers for 3DS. I want one that works in AutoCad, 3DS, Animator Pro, and lastly Windows. Oh, what about OS/2. Is anything special…
Alan; I want to buy a new video card. I now have a 256 max color Video Seven VRAM VGA card and an NEC MultiSync 3DS monitor. I want to go to at least 16 million colors at 800×600. Will the Diamond Viper do this with the drivers just discussed…
John; I guess I was just hopeful. Dennis
Gary; Ok. 🙁 Too bad, but thanks for letting me know. I loved your demo at Siggraph. Can't wait to get to use some of those new features. Dennis
Greg; Until I got on CI$, I didn't hear of upgrades until they had been shipping for a while. I will ask my local dealer about it, and if they know nothing, I may deal through your company. Thanks for the tips. Dennis
#3DS R3 ship date?
Message #54534
I heard that 3DS release 3 would be shipping "in a couple of weeks, mid September at the latest". Is this true? How can I pre-order. Will we be notified by snail-mail? Can't wait!!!! From what I saw at the show, it's too good to wait! Dennis
Did you use these books to do your fantastic resort animation on the 3DS-R3 tape? If you picked up how to do that from these books, I want them too. I didn't get an opportunity to look at them at the show. Two of them were stolen (maybe borrowed long…
Michael; Thanks for the info on possible better prices for OS/2. I will check it out. Dennis
Joseph; A mail order catalog called Tiger Software in Florida. Their phone number is (800) 888-4437, or (305) 443 8212. I haven't ever ordered from them, but was planning to do so in a couple of weeks. Dennis
Michael; I don't have a cd-rom. But I do use DOS, and was planning on the upgrade. I had located a source for $89.90 plus shipping. Thanks Again! Dennis
Michael; Great! I plan to buy it at the end of this month so I can get used to it before 3DS R3 is released. Thanks for the offer of help when I get it. Dennis
Martin; Well, I'm sure tring hard!
Thanks for clarifying the OS/2 issue Gary.
Martin & Gary; Thanks for the tips! Just having a hint of what direction to go (like a whole bank of lights and the noise.sxp routine) is a wonderful start. I have and am experimenting with my package, but sometimes the nights just fly by. If only I didn't have…
I was planning on purchasing OS/2 this month when I heard that it would do multi-tasking. To me, this means just a simple thing. Run 3DS-R3 to do rendering and if I want to go online to CI$, I can. I understand that the rendering will be slowed down, but…
#How can I do that good?
Message #52779
I was totally in awe of the animations on the 3DS video. I have renewed interest in the capabilities of the program. And Release 3 will be even more fantastic. However, I cannot seem to get (seem to get nothin, I can't get) the quality of the surfaces, shininess, clarity,…
Frank; To the best that I have determined, 3D Studio Release 2 will NOT work on OS/2. The above is what I am aware of. However, 3D Studio Release 3 will work on OS/2. (That was from a very knowledgeable person at the show). Dennis
C.A.N. July issue
Message #51117
The July issue of C.A.N. has been uploaded to the Animator area of the libraries entitled CAN9307.ZIP. This particular issue of CAN features some amature animators using AA Pro, 3DS, and Disney Studio. To obtain a copy of all of the files, send a 3.5" High Density floppy disk and…
ASDGTechSupport; I am very new to tape output. I have not done one yet. Please explain what a D1 output is, and also the Abekus compatible video tape. Does this require a special tape player to play the tape back? Please explain anything else someone like me (new to video)…
Ang; Thanks for your help, again! Gary Yost recommended a company in San Francisco that will output 1200 frames an hour for $200.00 per hour. That sounds reasonable for a good tape. I have yet to call them. I am trying to decide what animations to put on the tape.…
#HELP. VIDEO TAPE OUTPUT
Message #50534
Ang; I appreciate your VERY ACCURATE analogy of the Lexus and the Corolla. No one could be expected to imagine what the other would be. I intend to use a service bureau for making my tape, because otherwise my high quality animations might seem like a 20 year old car…
Service Bureau
Message #50533
Gary; Thanks for reposting the information. I am deciding what to put out to tape, and I specifically "saved" your input for this purpose, but being new to C'serve, and the software "Autosig" for it, I didn't realize it was overwritting all previous saves. No need for further response. I…
Michele; Thanks for your reply. I HAVE YOUR BOOK! I didn't realize it had information on output to Video. That's GREAT! It's all a matter of time. I haven't had the chance to read it all. But I will definitely review what you mentioned in your note, and check out…
#HELP. VIDEO TAPE OUTPUT
Message #50062
I have been working with animator Pro for a few years, and 3DS for almost a year. I am attempting to develop interest in my animations, and I realize that I need a showing of what I have done. I suppose that this is most likely on Video Tape so…
Yann; I looked up my files for the golf ball and thought that I had somehow forgotten to make it a solid. So I redid it from what I had. It was a solid. I subtracted many other solid spheres from it to get the dimples. Then I Put a…

I have a friend that has been making an ON DISK animation Magazine for about a year now. He calls it C.A.N. for Computer Animators News. It began very humbly and very simply, but has grown to be rather impressive. He has persons that have made animations, send them to…
David; At the time I was doing this as a final project for a class I was taking at a local college using their AME package. I am fairly sure that I started with a sphere made in AME. The only thing I could figure out, was the the dimples…
I continued to look for the answer to this problem, and found it on page 11-14 in the tutorial, "Detaching Faces". Thanks if anyone already responded. I think I read somewhere where I could delete a note if I liked. In this case, I would probably do so if I…
