Kieron, OK, using REPLY works just fine. You'll note that the SB: subject header now includes the number of the message being replied to. Your software may still group messages based on the header subject text, but the REPLY option insures that folks with various CIS readers will be able…
Loren, Rename your 3DADI.CFG (or delete it). From the 3DS directory, type 3DS VIBCFG. Set up your card with whatever seems to be the correct driver. I doubt that particular card is listed, but there may be a driver for the chip set it uses. If not, hopefully the card…
Kieron, Could I please ask you to use the REply option in CompuServe to maintain a thread of your conversation with Martin? Well, there, I guess I just did . You seem to be starting a new message each time, although you keep quoting from previous messages. If you use…
Dennis, The decimator chip (also known as the VX upgrade) for the PAR allows a small compressed preview image to be passed quickly across the bus to applications such as Razor Pro. PAR boards with a 'VX' in the serial # have the chip factory installed. Kevin Krell – Computer…
Tim, You do not need an additional TBC to the one included on the TBC IV. Kevin Krell – Computer Support Associates
Jeff, Hmmm. Certainly a long path. I'd break it into sections, and loft along a (relatively) short section of path, placing the road objects adjacent to each other. Depending on how detailed the road actually needs to be, I'd try to find some other way of representing it in a…
Jeff, Aren't you really trying to take an object and show it's movement over time (through the 10,000 frames) along the path? This would not increase the polygon count. If you need other objects to appear relatively motionless with respect to the moving objects, they could be hierarchly linked to…
Marc, Sorry, can't provide any input in that arena in regards to the SGI. Most people seem to go to an Abekas or Accom digital disk via an Ethernet connection (or to Exabyte tape for transfer at a service bureau/post house). A lot of other frame-by-frame stuff is often transferred…
Jeff, PMJI. Are you familiar with the concept of using variables that represent numerical values, rather than hard-coding in the actual # for each line of code? What Martin suggests is that you execute the line of code you planned (except you wanted 10,000 of them), using values read from…
Todd, That Vega crack was valid. I had a 1973 hatchback model, brand new. Within the first 100 miles, a shift up into 2nd @ 15 mph (right from the curb), blew the transmission, and dented the floor under my foot. At 10,000 miles, the engine blew – well, melted,…
Stanley, I believe there has been some traffic on the forum from people successfully running 3DS on the AMD processors (as long as math co-processors are provided). Kevin Krell – Computer Support Associates
Jonas, Just an added note: we're an Autodesk dealer AND registered user & haven't received our party invites yet. Kevin Krell – Computer Support Associates
Greg, Beards are required – but I think contact lenses count (I hope). Kevin Krell – Computer Support Associates
Tim, Yes, the PVR capture card (AD-2500) has connectors for input cabling at the back. The card get screwed down to the PVR-2500, and only fits on the one side, using header connections (no ribbon cable. Overhangs a second PCI slot, but does not actually plug into the slot. Kevin…
Martin, The 3243 is a 4.3 Gig drive and a VERY good choice. Make sure it's the AV model. Kevin Krell – Computer Support Associates
Kevin, Could you use lights to vary the color of the object based on its position from the camera? Either set up a bunch of lights of an appropriate color (they can be animated, and other objects excluded from their effect), or projected animated textures, etc. Kevin Krell – Computer…

Computer Support Associates is set to double our facility again, and we'll need to fill a number of positions. We're looking for folks local to Los Angeles. I'd like to hear from sales people (AutoCAD & Autodesk Multimedia), in-house telemarketers (lead qualification), techs, trainers and demo artists. Since we refer…
John, We're an SGI & Autodesk dealer in Los Angeles, if that's anywhere close. If not, Autodesk should be able to refer you to a SGI-renderer authorized dealer near you. Obviously, surrounded as we are by Hollywood, Culver City & Santa Monica, there is no shortage of studios using SGI.…
Tim, PMJI. The PVR capture card (AD-2500) connects to 1 side only of the PVR-2500 at a header block, with a screw moved to lock them together. Kevin Krell – Computer Support Associates
John, Sounds like you have FastView enabled. You can change the display settings (how detailed) from the pull-down menus. The side-bar menu (under Display) affects other display attributes (lines, backfaces, etc.). Kevin Krell – Computer Support Associates
Daivd, Hey, I knew that! Thanks for the posting. New processors are R4400s running at 250 MHz. Kevin Krell – Computer Support Associates
Gus, After your comments, I take it you're very pleased with your SGI ? Very nice machines, once you raise your wallet, and lower your expectations. Kevin Krell – Computer Support Associates
Guy, The Extreme (and I think SGI just announced another graphics monster coming in the Indigo2 line) would be useful for 3D modeling. Any final rendering or processing of images, or general tinkering, is only going to use the main cpu. In other words, computing power would be processor dependent…
Guy, Full Extended Warranty for the SGI Extreme is $2590 per year. Of course, there are lower cost/lower service plans. Kevin Krell – Computer Support Associates
Guy, OK then, I think I see your perspective on the SGI decision, and it probably isn't a bad one considering the alternatives. Are you sure, however, that an Indigo2 Extreme is really useful for that purpose? I doubt the hardware 3D graphics engines in the Extreme provide any assistance…
Guy, Have you looked at the cost for acquisition and output of Betacam SP quality images on the SGI? We're an SGI dealer, and the machines are definitely of value to some folks, but your arguments thus far haven't convinced me you need it. Believe me though, it's gonna cost…

Guy, There is no model-building, interface version of 3D Studio for the SGI. THe SGI Renderer is for rendering only, and can run from the command-line, or launched from the PC's Network Queue. Model development is on the PC side. Kevin Krell – Computer Support Associates
Carl, Heck, you didn't say 3" x 5", you said 35mm, which is the size of the negative or slide. Prints would be fine, depending on the finish, but slides would be a wee bit tiny. Kevin Krell – Computer Support Associates
Carl, Humour aside….Re: Flatbed scanners – the HP Scanjet 3C is indeed qa pretty decent sucker, very fast, lots of software, easy to setup, transparency option & OCR document feeder available. Since your question mentioned 35mm though, which is generally too small for good results with a flatbed (mounted OR…
Mike, The c1 update is a new set of disks (or CD), with a new serial number. You should upgrade through your dealer (it's a free update). Kevin Krell – Computer Support Associates
Micropolis: 818/709-3300 Kevin Krell – Computer Support Associates
Oh, great, a chance to sell someone the Brooklyn Bridge ! I've always wanted to do that. Tell Colin we'll all keep an eye out for one. Kevin Krell – Computer Support Associates
Jeffrey, Strangely enough, I think that the Texture Universe Browser (the Browser was bundled in with 3DS Release 4) will let you index a directory with your rendered images, then display them in a simple slide show. Kevin Krell – Computer Support Associates
Alan, PMJI. I use a Genoa 8500VL on my system at home – works fine with 3DS. Kevin Krell – Computer Support Associates
Jack, Probably should be "Gullible's Travails". But I like it. Good response. Kevin Krell – Computer Support Associates
Possibly a good solution would be a Personal Animation Recorder, which will play back animations @ 30fps with 16 million colors, in real-time, from a dedicated IDE hard disk. The PAR uses 1 ISA slot (a 2nd if you want a real-time capture card), and lists for $1995 + hard…
Paul, It's true that Micropolis has discontinued making all IDE drives, and is concentrating on SCSI and the higher-end of the disk drive market. The Conner 1.2 Gig is now the DPS favorite. However, stock is still available on the Micropolis drive (I can supply up to 200 drives). Kevin…
Anne, The Micron as you spec it is fine. More memory will let you do more, but it isn't likely you'll actually be doing any sizable production in either AutoCAD or 3DS (or NT) that should call for more than the 32M. Make sure you have enough modems to go…
Mark, Good move! Poor trees. Kevin Krell – Computer Support Associates
Carlton, Which EISA controller is in E000-EFFF? You may well be able to set the SCSI controller somewhere in C000-CFFF, since I don't think it takes the entire memory space. The extended video functions will go in there also – I forget at the moment – C000-C7FF, with the possibility…
John, For an example, the 50PMAN file supplied with 3DS is a HumanCAD model. Fine for mannequin work, ergonomic studies, etc., but there are much nicer models if you want something that actually resembles people, and has facial features, etc. Kevin Krell – Computer Support Associates
Marc, Animator Studio is indeed shipping. Perhaps your dealer is on credit hold, waited to palce your order along with others, or is affected by Autodesk's recent move of their shipping facility (from Petaluma to Milpitas). We normally receive product in approx. 3 days (since we're in California with Autodesk),…
Joe, Autodesk does sometimes contact registered users for special promotions and seminars, not necessarily for upgrades. Both Animator Studio and AutoCAD LT 2.0 are currently available – I assure you, on my word as an Autodesk dealer. Kevin Krell – Computer Support Associates
Mark, Hardcopy manuals, please. Kevin Krell – Computer Support Associates

Steve, The product from HumanCAD was Mannequin. The company is now defunct. Kevin Krell – Computer Support Associates
Dave, Here's what can happen on some machines – see if it applies to you. When pressing Play in Animator Studio, try pressing it 3 times. It should have started up on the 3rd press, and may do so consistently. I noticed this on a pre-release version in Training, and…
Mark, Welcome to the show! Are you here to help support AA Studio? Perhaps we should get a plaque for your desk "The Flak stops here" . Kevin Krell – Computer Support Associates
Alan, You're probably right – just thought it would be a kick to see you guys perform. BTW, the Adesk party's at the Sony lot in Culver City – registered users should get an invite, or can bring their hardware locks for admittance. Kevin Krell – Computer Support Associates
Chris, Animator Studio is out, so regardless of whether Autodesk got a mailing out to you – go see your dealer if you want to upgrade! Kevin Krell – Computer Support Assocaites
Daniel, The PAR serial # is not on the back plate, but on the back side of the circuit board (which requires a look inside the machine). Anyway, if you purchased an early board, it will not have the VX chip. This chip allows small scaled-down images to transfer across…
