#38590 OED Test Message #38611
From: David Baker CDROM Forum · General January 30, 1993 10:08 PM
Tim, that's the secret – keeping yourself exposed to the language. The French I did in school was wasted because I have never been near France or known anyone who spoke French (except my Mum – she has just gone back to school to learn French again – at 51!).…

Larry, the main problem is…after using Word for Windows for 6 months now, I'm beginning to forget which is the correct spelling, English or American! A word comes up & I have to look at it 3 or 4 times before taking action. Dave.

Tim, I was going to quote something spectacular in Latin, but might embarrass myself so I won't – haven't actually opened a Latin textbook for 14 years! We didn't have Greek in our school, just Latin, French or German. Nowadays it's Japanese or Indonesian which makes a lot more sense…

Larry, I guess there must be over 100 differences & possibly up to 500 or more. In the past (Word 5.0) there use to be 2 dictionaries (AM.LEX & BR.LEX) for spell-checking, but now we only get the American one in Malaysia. I guess it's the principle more than anything…
#38012 #OED Test Message #38171
From: David Baker CDROM Forum · General January 27, 1993 8:19 AM
Tim, they always told me Latin was a dead language & a waste of time learning. I did it for 5 years anyway because there were only 2 of us in the class & the other guy was a genius so the teacher could spend all his time on me!…
#37903 Styles of styli Message #37992
From: David Baker CDROM Forum · General January 25, 1993 8:04 AM
Kathy, from a selfish point of view I would like to see the price of the OED come down to an affordable level, but I can understand that it won't while they can make a profit at the current price. It's a pity that the average man-in-the-street won't be able…

Thanks Kathy, I certainly wouldn't argue with a BA in Linguistics! I did 4 years of Latin in High School (15 years ago) but must have pressed the erase button straight after the exams. Your explanation also explains another point that came up: hippopotamus – hippopotami rhinoceros – rhinoceroses I…
#37696 OED Test Message #37790
From: David Baker CDROM Forum · General January 23, 1993 5:45 AM
Tim, pardon my spelling error there – I did mean styli or styluses. Seems strange that a word can have 2 valid plurals! If you get 4 pages on a word such as this, it sounds like this OED will be worth it. I am actually in a survey company…
#OED Test Message #37573
From: David Baker CDROM Forum · General January 21, 1993 8:37 AM
Could I impose on this forum & get someone to look up a word in the OED & copy the data to a message for me. I am trying to convince the boss that we need one for the office but haven't got there yet. Today we had discussion over…
#31640 COM PORT 3 Access Message #31743
From: David Baker CDROM Forum · NAUTILUS PC November 26, 1992 9:32 AM
I second the motion. My fax/modem is set for COM3 & all my other software can handle it. I'm not going to pull it out & arrange it just for Nautilus, even though I would like to partipate in the LINK without going through Compuserve all the time.
#28062 CD Speedway Message #28456
From: David Baker CDROM Forum · General October 12, 1992 10:44 AM
Ok, how can I go about getting a copy of Speedway from Malaysia? can I order one by fax or phone with a Mastercard or Visa & have it sent over here? If you can give me an international number to send the order I'll get right onto it. Dave…

Sorry, no help, but I can confirm that I have exactly the same problem so we are both doing something wrong or there is a fault in the setup process. I hope we find out as it is a hassle.

I have finally obtained drivers for SBPRO under windows 3.1, but am having trouble trying to figure out how to install them. I go into CONTROL PANEL, select DRIVERS, select ADD, select UPDATED DRIVERS, select A:\, and it comes up with the 3 new drivers that I wish to install.…

Thanks for the info Rick – I'll fax them tomorrow & see if they can locate a dealer who is keen to send the unit overseas.

Thanks a lot. I just had a go at the local dealer here, but he is definitely not interested. I finally found an old article about different CD-ROM players so now I have the specs – all I need is someone to buy it from! Not many dealers are keen…

Thanks for all the info Ran, I am almost talked into buying it. You wouldn't happen to have a fax number for Sony in the literature would you? (not an 800 number – can't use them from here) I have some information being mailed across but it will take a…
