Suppose I move from MS-DOS to OS/2. How could I continue to acccess my Sony 531 CD-ROM and use my CD disks?

Can anyone tell me why the CD-ROM industry designed the disk caddy? It makes no sense to me. I'm getting a Sony 535 drive. hy can't the publishers just slap the caddy on? I mean, CD music players don't need them. Anyone have an explanation?
