Doug: You have to use the Viper in VESA emulation mode. You run VPRVESA and load the TSR which puts the Viper into VESA mode, and then you run Rio 6.3 and choose the VESA driver. Ours works all the way up to 800×600 in 24-bit color mode (looks great!)…
Bob: If you wouldn't mind, could you tell me where we can get info on this Altamira's Composer that you mentioned you use. I am just the "techno-nerd" that makes everything work, but I don't do a lot of research in the software end (I did for animation, and we…
Yea, they charged us (but it was only $95.) Plus, we were upgrading from 5.02 Professional to 6.3 Desktop; maybe that made a difference. If you are looking for great font support, try the 6.3 version. If you have any questions, please drop me a note. If I cannot answer…
The 24-bit anti-aliasing is pretty good in Rio 6.3 (but it is slow, even on our P5-66 system). We said "what the heck, it's only a $95 upgrade fee" and it has been well worth it.
What video card are you using? We use the Diamond Viper PCI and it works GREAT!
Rio 6.3 is still for DOS, though it is getting much better. The use of Adobe fonts has been a very welcomed addition. We had 431 font styles that we could use in Adobe products, and now Rio uses them just fine. I was approached by AT&T GSL to be…
We are actually using Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and Fractal Design Painter X2 for all of our still graphics (3D Studio r3 for our animations.) In our current 16-bit color display system on our presentation computer, these programs are working OK. We do still see advantages to Rio, but not…
"Screaming" is the only way to put it! I tried 3DSr3 under Windows and I did not notice any slowdown (though I haven't tried any long rendering processes.) I do know that the P5-66 we have combined with 32 MB RAM, a Viper PCI, and a PCI SCSI-2 controller connected…

Vibrant Drivers

It is interesting to see everyone talk about the secrecy at Autodesk. I think that a native NT app must be in the works. You can bet your last dollar that AutoCAD is currently being written for NT, and it seems that with today's proper object oriented thinking, many of…
Good advice! I guess that I would have to have a $2500 rider on it since that is what we paid for the software. I don't think my boss is going to be too keen on this; but, he also knows that we would never take work home either. Interesting…
The DX4\100's have not arrived yet. They are scheduled to be here next week. I cannot wait to try them, especially when the Vibrant driver is our for my new ATI PCI video card with the Mach64 chip. I'll keep you updated as to how it's going. BTW, I bought…
Thanks for the advice! I will try the VPRMODE trick. Also, I wonder if I should go to QEMM instead of EMM386?
I just received an ATI Graphics WINTURBO mach64 PCI video card (the 2MB version.) It is supposed to be about 60% faster than our VIPER PCI card. I can't wait to try it, but is is not supported by 3DS right now. I talked to Vibrant Graphics' project manager for…
OK, I feel stupid. I though that "Doodad" was some product from IPAS because I saw people capitalizing the "D". I'll be offline for a few days hiding my face in shame (I'll look through the old messages to see if I can find what specific module they were talking…
You are right about the exclusions not being mentioned in the documentation. I was told by Diamond that I had to have it even on the PCI version. Also, Vibrant told me I had to exclude C000-C7FF, but if I had problems (which I did) go ahead and exclude the…
#What' this IPAS Doodad

I am very new to 3D Studio and I just this week got our Pentium system up and running with it (I'm on the "bleeding edge" of technology; the Viper PCI and new Wacom tablet have been pains.) I am familiar with who IPAS is but what is this Doodad…
I have some friends that are doing something that sounds weird but it actually works well for them. The take their flics over to a Video Toaster which is built-up enough to run them in realtime. They then add their vocals from reel-to-reel and/or music from CD and sync them…
If you could get your hands on a used BetaSP deck you would be doing yourself a tremendous favor. There is no comparision in the quality but even used Beta's are pretty expensive. I've always had a lot of luck with buying used equipement (through an acutual used machine broker,…
When I talked to Diamond they said that I must exclude the A000-C7FF range (A000-B999 is video memory and C000-C7FF is the ROM address.) I had some other people tell me to try only excluding C000-C7FF but I had all kinds of problems whenever I had any other exclusion statement…

Alan has a good point about excluding memory. I had to eat up most of my upper memory because I had to exlude A000-C7FF (I'm using emm386 so the line is x=a000-c7ff). But this solved the last of my problems. The date of the files that I am using is…
I could not get the drivers from CompuServe to work properly, so I called Vibrant and talked to John in Technical Support. He had me download them from Vibrant's BBS (512-918-3411) and they worked just fine. The instructions are to download the file named VIBCFG.ZIP, unzip it and copy the…
