TeX is VERY popular in the scientific, especially the mathematical community. At the Caltech math dept. we consciously decided not to use it after observing that in many places the result of switching to TeX was that faculty typed their own papers. So we use a WYSIWYG scientific word processor…

I have the complete packages of both A&L 1.0 and 2.0. The T&T manuals are somewhat different but largely the same. It is dated 11/89 in version 2.0. Of 7 lessons, the first 6 have the same titles but lesson 7 in 2.0 is called "The blend command". – Barry

Sorry to come in so late but I was struck by your "I would avoid the Softcraft" reference to their font editor. I've used it for some simple tasks quite happily and I know it fared best in the PC Magazine review so I wonder what you don't like about…
