Kevin… PMJI… I wonder if I'm missing something. I've got a 386/40 with SB basic and a Mitsumi drive. I can play sounds on the various CDs I have, but I really don't know whether I'm missing hearing some redbook on some of the disks. For instance, the audio on…

Jan… I've gotten on your bbs a couple times and can't make heads or tails of it. Perhaps that says little for me… but nevertheless I'd like some guidance as to what to do once I get on. I look for a download menu, but can't find one. Also, what…

#Mitsumi Memory Loss
Message #36838
Craig… Negative… It's all on the same line with mscdex so I haven't tried, like you, to load it high. I know so little about these drivers and the configs in autoexec/config that I didn't even think about loading mcmcde high. By the way, what the %^&* is the latter?…

Adrian… The only thing I have is the msmcdex, stacker, and a couple other things that when loaded high still allow me almost 600k. I won't be needing, yet, any diff configurations to permit me to run what I want when I want it. No networks, for example.
Rich… Have you hired Albert as your straight man yet? 🙂

Mitsumi Memory Loss
Message #35895
Adrian… Thanks. I'll hunt them up out of curiosity… I would think you'd have to have a fairly complicated setup to warrant using different configuration or autoexec files. I don't. I operate Stacker, load everything I can high, and end up with about 588k to run stuff. I haven't seen…

Tom… I agree. As a matter of fact I haven't seen any local vendor offering a 5S.
#nuff ram for cd ops?
Message #35173
I just got a cdrom drive and have gotten a few messages indicating that there's "not enough memory" to do certain things. Without getting into specifics, is it your impression that 4MB is enough on a 386/40 system to handle most cdrom ops? Nothing special: just MM, and the usual…
Speedway?
Message #35074
I know from the hype that Speedway is supposed to speed up your CDROM. Does it do anything worth spending the $ for? If you feel like offering a little more: Basically, simply, how is it supposed to work?
John… Yes, I got a small manual with mine from Groupware. It's about 25 pages or so. Don't know where you got yours, but Ishmail (on this forum at Groupware) would probably help. I also have a soundblaster. I thought, at first, it wasn't working, but I just goofed. It…
John… I confessed some ignorance to John Small in another msg here about my expanded memory. I told him I assumed I have only 64k *expanded*, as opposed to *extended* memory available… And that I was apparently using all 64k of that up with Stacker and DOS5. When you say…
Kevin… I stumbled onto the exact same solution. I was using the 640×480/32K driver (apparently vga443.drv) and changed it to 640×480/256 and solved my problem. But I really don't have any use for 32k. I was just using it because it was the highest resolution. bp
John… I'm fairly ignorant on the subject of EMS. Here's where I am: I assume only 64k of EMS (Expanded) is avail. I'm using expanded memory for DOS 5 (not sure how much DOS uses of EMS), and for Stacker. Stacker uses some 20k+ I believe. So that about uses…
.WRI files on Nautilus
Message #35062
When I look at .WRI files from Nautilus, most of the time the text is in vertical form, i.e.: N au t i lus Some are not. Any idea what's causing that? (I bought your demo disk, Vol. 2-11, I think… ) Thanks Bob Pierce

Ismail… PMJI… Got the modem problem taken care of. Your advice re COM4 was right on. Thanks. Bob Pierce
John… I bought what I believe is the same package at Sam's Wholesale for $399. The sound card is the *PLUS*, not the *16*. Big diff. Especially in price.
Jan… I'm a new CDROM user. But Compton's Family Encyclopedia is a disappointment… The MM is a few notes in the margins you click on to get pix, sounds, or graphs. Carmen Deluxe is pretty tough. Nautilus is darned interesting. I'm enjoying this thread cuz I'm looking for some good…

#Mitsumi Memory Loss
Message #34803
Just installed a Mitsumi 5S. When I go into Windows two files are loaded into memory which leaves me only 508K to run applications (not enough for Ozcis, for example). They are MTMCDE.SYS which is 20,784KB; and there is MSCDEX.EXE, which is another 36,208KB. How can I handle this? Can…
