That's an interesting point that's always intrigued me. You don't generally
find Chevy owners telling Ford owners where they've went wrong, nor will you
often find Nakamichi owners castigating Teac users. There's something about
computers that brings out a keen sense of competition in their owners and
users. I don't think it has anything to do with brand loyalty as such (how
could you get behind Tramiel or Jobs?). I think it's more rooted in the notion
that computers are just extensions of ourselves. When you look at the
motivation behind many of today's computer purchases (to help Johnny get ahead
in school, or to get rich programming), it's apparent that a much higher
percentage of such buyers are just too damn competitive by nature than is the
case with other consumer purchases. It's ourselves, our own vulnerabilities
that are at stake in the "my computer's better than yours" wars.
