One of my biggest gripes against the Mac is its Toolbox, or Kernel. It's so generic and the Apple populist approach to programming so ingrained in programmers heads that nothing short of a hi-speed, quantum physics calculation will take advantage of math coprocessors. Look in last week's MacWeek for the "dawning" of this phenomenon in the Mac populace. An '040 in an Amiga will fly like a Banshee, but on a Mac, you might get decent graphic updating, or your applications will "pop" up faster. Sheesh. The most telling sign is the rarity of software packages containing 2 programs: 88x compiled & non-88x compiled. Almost all programs that can take advantage of such things will offer two versions of their code. Not so with the Mac. I only wish they came out with an optimized 882 version of Quark. It's so pathetic that the biggest thing over on the Mac side are "Photoshop accelerators," essentially processors on a card that will do alot of the number crunching that the '040 should be able to do itself if Apple wasn't so strict in its programming protocol.
