My OLR (Tapcis) crashed when I asked it to read messages from this forum. I thought that perhaps the file in which it stores messages (cdrom.msg) had become corrupted, so I took a look at it. TYPE CDROM.MSG produced "Invalid device request reading device CDROM", and it was impossible to delete the file. CDROM is the device name of my new CDROM drive. I found that it is now impossible to save files with names of the form CDROM.*. I solved the problem by renaming the CDROM drive as CDROM1. I suspect that this explains why a recent backup failed: I guess it couldn't open the files with names CDROM.*. I guess that with MSCDEX installed CDROM (or whatever you call the drive) becomes a reserved name, but can someone confirm this? Is it documented somewhere – I certainly don't think it was in the documentation that came with my drive. I hope that this message may help some other novice avoid this interesting problem. Mark.
