John, I've used our Exabyte tape utility program to make and use 'tar' files. It's possible to make a UNIX CD from files with longer than 8.3 filenames using either the PC or Mac versions of TOPiX (the CD premastering s/w we use) or with some other programs. Our Washington DC shop has done this successfully, and the Vancouver shop has made VAX/VMS CDs which may also have non-PC filenames (it's been so long since I've used VMS I just don't remember). I'm sure than among the bunch of us we could help you out. Actually, I think TOPiX can use any ISO9660 compliant filenames, and there is a switch that allows one to use non-standard filenames as well. Would you like to try it out?
