Cyberspace Ships
Jeffrey (and whoever else at Autodesk is listening),
That was not the news we have been wating for (for three years mind you). With
all due respect to Autodesk, we seem to going in the wrong direction here. When
Autodesk succeeded with AutoCAD and lately with 3D Studio in the market place,
did it do so by releasing developer kits? I can just see Autodesk in 1982
releasing a CAD developer kit. What a super success that would have been!
What is needed here is a workable (even crude) application that has device
drivers or some kind of hooks that support some if not most of the devices out
there. The application software must allow non-programmers to develop 3D
objects and environments (not code) and then manipulate them. If Autodesk does
not do this, it will be not be a real player in this market and I for one, am
going with someone else. Not that I am going to buy millions of $ ofVR
equipment in the next few months, but I have at least two clients who want to
do something with this stuff. They have pretty deep pockets, but not deep
enough to hire a team of programmers to develop what they need.
Remember what made AutoCAD successful in the first place – a good solid product
that customers could use, plenty of device drivers, a dealer network that
understood and could use the application, and thousands of consultants like me
who used the customizable capabilities of AutoCAD (without being C programmers)
to create custom applications to match customers' needs.
So tell me it aint true that Autodesk is going to develop C compilers next. 🙂
