Sorry – what you are seeing is a problem with the ATI board at 800×600 24 bit.
Basically, you are seeing CPU timming contention with the refresh logic.
Before we release the driver to ATI we gave them a choice of having that mode
removed from the menu, but they decided to keep it.
One thing that you may do to help reduce it is to select a lower refresh rate
monitor. Thats right, selecting a monitor with a slower refresh rate (60Hz
instead of 72Hz) will reduce the "noise" you are seeing.
If you move down to 65536 colors, the noise will vanish.
This is one reason why TrueVision does so well…
