You do need another device driver to access the CD ROM drive. My CD ROM did not have and most will not, unless you order a multimedia kit, which usually includes a sound card, drivers, cable and a CD ROM. I paid extra for the cables and SCSI support drivers when I bought my CD ROM. Since you have an Adaptec Adapter, call Adaptec to get the drivers. Or I believe Corel sells SCSI drivers for most cards.
