I agree totally with your assessment of the phenomenom (and your assessment of the Atari 8 bit). There are some obvious (to me, anyway) parallels that should be looked at. The Atari 8 bit is/was far and away more of a complete machine than the C64 — yet the loudest noises were heard from the C64 crowd. Now it seems the loudest noise are coming from the Atari ST camp. It's interesting that the C64 and Atari ST are Tramiel machines and the Atari 8 bit and Amiga are Jay Minor machines. (I do agree with Dan tho, that both average age of user and price paid for the machine has a direct corelational to the 'loudness' of the evangelism).
