Chris,
>> Do you have any strong preferences for any particular network? <<
Yes, but it depends. I went with LANTASTIC 5.0 which is very good.
Many people go with the AI version as you can buy 3rd party adapters.
I went with the proprietary boards which kinda locks you in. But I
really like the performance and the ease of installation, and while
its more expensive, I like the plug and play approach.
On the other hand, Netware, is no doubt the best, if you can afford
the package. You don't want the starter kit as it cludgy, but the
full blown version has file management and file handling, which
solves file sharing problems which LAN 5.0 does not. The way to
resolve this with LAN 5.0 is to make you common files READ only.
Which is not a big deal.
I think LAN 5.0 is great, but if you plan on building a system with 5
for more machines you might consider Netware. I went with LAN 5.0
figuring that if I needed to, later on I would switch. So far, I've
got no complaints. Figuring out how it worked, took some time, but
once you understand it, its a breeze. Like most things I guess. <g>
