Christian, it means using a logarythmic scale on the axes of the graph. Many graphs, especially the ones I work with in econometrics, use logarythmic scaling. If you aren't familiar with them, it goes something like this: 1 2 5 10 20 50 100200 500 1000 | | | | | | | | | | this is a logarythmic axis. Basically, you take the the logarythm of each value to base 10 (or e, in some cases), and use that to derive the scaling. It's very handy for data that rapidly grows in value, such as stock market data, viral growth, GDP, etc. I hope this helps, and yes, it's mandatory in any package that is going to be used by many people.
