Apple is most definitely migrating to the PowerPC. You can go buy one today, if any are left. (My company got ahold of one at a MicroCenter Monday afternoon; supposedly the last of its configuration in the store: model 7100 8/250). You could still get a 68040 Quadra and then upgrade in a few months (2 or 3 options) if you want to sit out the initial period of waiting for native apps to appear. It is likely that a year from now the only Macs Apple will be selling will have PowerPC chips in them. The PowerMacs run System Software version 7.1.2, and apart from a few minor updates it is hard to distinguish from 7.1. Of course all the real work is hidden under the interface. If you go to a store, don't leave without playing with the "Graphing Calculator" which is a native app that ships with the machine and really shows off the PowerPC. –John
