The Amiga's default graphics mode is either PAL or NTSC, but the Amiga can generate several other modes. If a program doesn't open its screen using the OS, the Amiga with give the program the default mode for the system (PAL or NTSC), even if the Workbench is using a VGA mode. The ICONTROL Pref has a setting called PROMOTION. If promotion is set, the OS will try to substitute the Double-PAL & Double-NTSC modes for the NTSC & PAL modes. This does not work as well as it should. The biggest problem is that many games bypass the OS to open there screens, which prevents the OS from seeing them then promoting them. You can find a program in the libraries called PPREFS.LHA, which does a much better job of substituting the VGA modes for the NTSC & PAL modes. Also there is a program called MonED, which allows you to adjust the monitor drives, increasing compatiblity with some VGA monitors.
