Doug Lapidary Journal has been covering this issue to some extent for several issues, most recently making the point that amateur collectors in some cases are the only viable source of manpower to locate and preserve fossils erroding out and being destroyed by exposure to the elements. The corollary issue of commercial collecting for profit is IMO debatable, but to block all access is a frightening prospect to say the least! I couldn't agree more that it's critical to be responsible and careful with our environment but to shut it down is patently absurd. -Russ
