Ed,
I have seen your problem appear exactly as you stated with a cracked
version of 3DS R3. But, since that couldn't be the problem it seems only
logical to assume it's something to do with paging to your HD because it
only happens once you run out of RAM. Maybe even a HD controller problem or
conflict. Also, because this is a _very_ isolated problem you should not be
asking The Yost Group for help as it most definately not the software.
What version of DOS are you running? Anyway, good luck finding the
culprit. <g>
