One of my favorite explanations of the way the mind works goes like this: For thousands of years, man has had myths about dolphins saving drowning swimmers, by pushing them back towards land. But we never hear from the swimmers that the dolphins push out to sea, right? It's much more dramatic to tell someone that a great site has been closed. And if a savvy collector finds out about a few site littered with valuable rocks, something tells me they'd haul away a few pails before they send a press release to the Mineral News. I think if you were paying even as little as a buck a pound, you'd think twice before hauling something home. Wasn't "preservation" one of our grand objectives? Or does "collecting" mean hauling away anything that glints?
