Some maps I mentioned were based on a diamond-tiling (as in Queen of diamonds).
Among other things, that tiling emulates the wave pattern that follows a boat
moving slowly down a channel. The tiles are bounded by the diagonal waves
produced by the boat and by their reflection off the walls of the channel.
I've got my daughter to thank for that information. Last week she dragged me
kicking and screaming to see Shirley McLaine's new movie. I saw the pattern in
one of the first scenes.
Maybe something like that will work for your < boat passing over head>
A diamond-tiling for water is also used for "Wolf-Pack," at least for the
picture on the cover. (I think I called this software Wolfenstein when I
mentioned it about a week ago, sorry).
