You seem to have been reading Gibbon's "Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire".
Interesting book.
Although you say there is nothing wrong with "greed", personally I would put
"Love" "Self Sacrifice" "Fear"… well before greed. In my rather ancient
and slightly conservative upbringing… greed was a "nasty" word when applied
to an individual.
