Thanks for the pointer to SCSIUtil. According to Don Curtis/Sysop, all
modern drives auto-park the heads. The power-down feature works good, and the
source code included makes it nice if I want to do other things with it.
Quiet.lha in AU/lib 9 (quietscsi) is what I was looking for, except it
doesn't have the source code with it.
Quietscsi powers the scsi device down after a specified time, then watches
for disk accesses/commands, and powers it up when it sees one. Runs in
background and seems ideal for reducing the noise (not much, since the fan is
noisier right now), and saving wear/tear on the harddisk during unattended
periods – bbs, cron pgms, disk optimizer(sleep), earthquake monitor, etc.
