GVP IMPACT II HC+8
Well here's the problem…
I purchased a used GVP HC+8 Series II controller for my Amiga 2000HD rev.6.
Along with the board came a Quantum 80 meg hard drive and 4 megs of ram. The
board and drive were advertised as working perfectly 3 months ago.
I read the instructions 6 times before attempting installation and it seemed to
go smoothly. The cables are all keyed so I couldn't put them in wrong. I was
very careful of static electricity because I've been bitten by that bug before.
Put it all back together, turned it on… First thing I got was a guru.
Then I got that sickening burnt resistor smell. Shut it off, took the cabinet
off and the drive was very warm. Too Warm. With the machine back on I tryed the
install software (what the heck!) It did not recognise the drive as being
there. SysInfo recognises the board and the RAM but not the drive. So I said to
myself " Bad drive". Gotta get another. So…
I picked up another drive, a factory referb 20 megger ( Why blow up another big
one )
but this time I decided to check the voltages first to make sure the board
wasn" t super electrified. The readings were 12 and 5 volts. Just right ( I
think ). Hooked it all up this time with the cover off. plugged it in turned it
on… POP ! something burned on the drive.
Thats 100 megs down the tubes…
I'm really at a loss here folks and can't afford to buy any more drives.
The first drive was terminated the second wasn't. I'm sure I had them plugged
in correctly. My system now has the Commodore 2090 card and a Rodine 35 meg
drive that works perfectly. I have no other cards in the machine. The 4megs of
RAM are there.
Any suggestions? Comments? Thanks !
