I work at Lotus on a product called Video for Notes, which allows the distribution on video accross the network via Lotus Notes (see press release below). Using Video for Notes Video for Notes will benefit users in all market segments. For example, an advertising agency can embed video clips in Notes to assist in the creative review and approval process. This multimedia interaction ensures that an ad campaign meets business objectives. Using Video for Notes allows all members of the creative process — from copywriters, video producers, account executives and the client — to collaborate more efficiently and effectively, no matter where they are located. New York University is using Video for Notes as an innovative means for students to participate in a virtual college. "I am impressed with Video for Notes and believe it is a significant asset for facilitating corporate training and distance learning," said Richard Vigilante, director, Information Technologies Institute, New York University. "Video for Notes will be the killer application for video-based training in the 1990s." Users also can view video when disconnected from the network. For example, a traveling salesperson with product video footage or testimonials could download video to a laptop, then play the video at the customer site to illustrate a point, showcase a product or deliver testimonials. Video for Notes is Easy for Administrators Video for Notes has a secure, flexible replication and distribution model that allows administrators to balance user demands easily. The Lotus Video for Notes site manager distributes video to Notes users by generating a single copy of the video at each location regardless of how many times the video appears in mail messages or other documents. This distribution mechanism minimizes long-term storage problems. Video for Notes also allows the administrator to introduce gradually video into an enterprise-wide network and make video available to the entire workgroup regardless of size or current network connections. Video for Notes provides direct and immediate playback from video servers for high capacity local-area networks. When a local-area network does not permit continuous playback, staged playback is available. Staged playback allows video to be downloaded automatically from a server to the desktop and then viewed. For workgroup members that do not have wide-area networks, Video for Notes applications can be distributed through CD-ROM. In addition to standard network file systems, Video for Notes initially supports two video server software products from Partners Novell and Starlight Networks. Pricing, Availability and System Requirements Initially, the Lotus Video for Notes site manager is available on an OS/2 based Notes server. Lotus Video for Notes requires Lotus Notes Release 3.1.5 or above client and Release 3.2 or above server software, running a 486 or Pentium processor. Each site manager license is available for an estimated retail price of $2,695. Video for Notes requires both a Lotus Notes client and a Video for Notes client. The Windows-based Video for Notes client software is available for an estimated retail price of $120.
