Tim,
Hmmm, don't hear of problems with the ME often. Are you picking on the name,
renaming it, then typing P? If so, just drag the sample sphere to a new slot,
make changes if necessary, type P, then rename it.
As far as the material not looking the same in the scene, my first guess would
be colored lights (check ambient, too) somewhere in the scene. Let me know if
that helps.
