Hi Jeffrey, I'm in the same boat (can't yet afford the good stuff). I recently bought a product called "MultiPro CTV" from AITech (1-800-882-8184) that works very well. It cost around $250 and has, in my opinion, I nice clean signal. It is an external unit with VGA pass-thru, it outputs composite and S-VHS, it does not require a software driver, and works with DOS or Windows. I had started with an expensive vga card ($1200) about 3 years ago and was not happy with the quality, I also returned another unit recently because of poor quality of signal.
