Stephen,
Devices at either end of a SCSI bus need terminator resistors to
electrically 'balance' the SCSI bus. Devices in the middle…don't need them.
For the resistor network to work (the termination), there needs to be a
single 5v supply that one of the devices on the bus must supply,
otherwise…the bus will "mis-behave"
Check your drive literature (if you have any) it should explain it all
to you.
