One of the biggest problems with MS, to use an analogy, is that they not only are a major car manufacturer and seller (apps), but they make and control the highway (Windows). Their apps can drive the OS design when it's convenient to them, and can know about OS features well in advance of the competition, not to mention the old "undocumented calls that nobody else knows about" feature.
