Scanners

I've suddenly decided that I can't live w/o a scanner any longer and must
have one. This thought has taken root to the point that I dream of purchase
and study Computer shopper cover to cover (then roll it into a firelog and burn
it) ! The frustrating part is that I don't have a clue as to what to look for
and since I've heard prices are plummeting I can't figure out what to grab!!
Can you give me some advice? I will be working to output hardcopy and video.
