Fold mountains

As I recall, those folds are thought by some to be related to the Applachians.
Do you know how they were dated? Problem is that except for a small subsurface
patch of Jurrasic redbeds in Michigan there are no sediments in mid-America
between the Permian and the Cretaceous. It's hard to date structures in the
area that are post Permian and pre-Cretaceous from the sediments. There aren't
any.
