Hi, Kamron– I guess you are talking about those rises bracketing the Panama Deep and maybe the Galapagos Islands. Is it clear they are really as mesa-like as they appear on the map? Let a number of volcanoes like the big island of Hawaii all form in a region near simultaneously rather than one at a time in the exact spot to form a line, and I imagine it would come out like what I see on the map; I would guess the edges would slope off like Hawaii, which might appear sharp on a large scale map. I do not really know what forces might shape such things, and thus even vertical cliffs would not be too much of a surprise for me… Note that there is no law confining the Cretaceous superplume episode or other hot spot eruptions to the west Pacific. Thus I will hazard a wild guess that these are from broader hot spots. –Doug
