I am not advocating buying "lesser equipment" What I said was that if you
wait, you'll never buy anything. Two and a half years ago I bought a 286
for home use. I paid $2300 for VGA, 640K RAM and a 20MB hard disk. Today I
can get a 386 with VGA, 2MB RAM and a 40MB hard disk for about $1500.00.
Should I have waited? And if I did wait, would I now be saying "wait
another year — 486 will go down in price."?
I hope you see what I'm getting at. If you have a need for something, then
buy it — get the best you can get for the money, as long as you get what
you need. There are a lot on CD-ROM drives out there that are not MPC
compliant, but are available at a good price. If you don't have to use an
MPC product (of which there are only 2 or 3), then it doesn't matter. If
you can afford a total MPC system, then buy it, but be prepared for
changes. Just like a 286 is now being considered obsolete by the press —
and certainly by MPC — today's MPC drive may not be compatible with
tomorrow's standards.
