I have found these decks to be very reliable and easy to use. I know nothing
of the Sony 1000 you ask about. Likewise I'm not informed about Video
Director. Your idea of using Hi-8 as a master makes very good sense to me,
especially because you could audio-dub via PCM, which is far superior to the
linear audio tracks.
If I read your remaining question correctly, having time cod on the the source
decks is a big, big help. I agree with other amatures who say its the only way
to go (maybe a bit of an exaggeration). This permits you to change tapes and
not have to rewind to start and re calibrate the counter. This saves me hours.
On the other hand unless you are going to do complex insert edits or maybe even
simple ones, I would find less need for time code on the record side.
Remember that there is a control track on VHS and S-VHS. and none that I know
of on Hi-8.
I hope I haven't been confusing. If any of this bears correction, hopefully a
more knowledgeable person will jump in.
