The problem you are seeing is caused, at least as it was explained to me, by 3DS looking for VGA sync signals. Since an XGA board when running in an XGA doesn't produce any of these signals (some TIGA boards exhibit the same problem), 3DS hangs while waiting forever for the sync signal. I'm told that this has been fixed with 3DS 2.0, but I haven't verified it yet. The only workaround to the problem is to use VGA for display and the XGA for rendering or to simply avoid the things that cause hangs. It sounds like you've found most of them so far.
