Brian, Having spent the whole day pulling out boards, reformatting disks, changing configuration settings, etc., I have finally found what looks like the problem. I noticed that in Norton Commander's editor that entering control-Y for a line delete was occasionaly resulting in the letter Y rather than a line delete. I swopped keyboards and the problem has gone. The rogue keyboard works fine with other machines. Obscure or what? I haven't yet had time to get everything back to normal but I will let you know if this is a final cure. Many thanks for your help. It would be interesting to know what is happening here as the keyboard seems to be fault free. I am using a keyboard extension cable.
