Jean, AutoCAD v11 keeps a lock file called acad.pwd. Yep, even on a single
user system. When ACAD crashes or when you shut the computer off while in
the drawing editor, or even at the main menu, the program is fooled into
thinking that the user is still on line when you try to re-enter the
drawing editor. Below is a message that outlines the procedure to recover
from this.

Go to the AutoCAD Main Menu.
Pick 6. File Utilities.
Pick 3. Delete files.
Enter ACAD.PWD or a path to that file.
Go to the main menu again.
Pick 5. Configure AutoCAD.
Pick 8. Configure Operating Parameters.
Pick 11. Server Authorization…
It will say "acad.pwd is missing or unreadable."
Enter the maximum number of users for this package <1>.
Enter the Authorization code if the above number is more than 1.
Hit return a few times to get to the main menu.
Start a new drawing.

I keep a copy of my acad.pwd (and ame.pwd) in a separate directory. Then,
copy it/them back into my acad directory when this happens. This clears up
the problem for me. You might try it as a preventative for future crashes
or system shut-downs in the drawing editor. It is much simpler than the
steps that are necessary if you haven't taken this simple precaution.
