There is a standard ANSI/ISO for the 128 meg magnetic optical drives so
they are supposedly compatible between everyone. The drive is around $2000
and the carts (128meg) are similar in price to Syquest carts … (by the
way IBM and a group of 9 vendors came up with the ANSI/ISO standard to try
to unseat syquest as the king of removable media). The speed is supposed
to be under 30ms and I have heard claims to 9ms.
The other formats 600 meg drives have little or no standards I guess their
is a sony standard somewhat. But interchange between these drives is very
questionable.
