how are we doing?
Reading an article promising detailed information covering every
aspect of 'Fimbulwinter, The Brand New Last _Cool_ Thing' and finding it to
be a badly condensed version of the user manual is not all that
informative. I could've bought the thing and read that for myself. I also
don't want to hear whingeing and disinformation about something (as 'That
Williams guy' (a fitting epitaph) seems to be almost capable of writing)
Being more cautious as to who writes what and how carefully might be in
order.
It's hard to address the entire spectrum of possible uses for the
machine. I think AW would do well to _not_ attempt it. Instead, address how
best to use the machine, with explanatory reviews of things of more
specialized interest. Aim at least some of it at the true hardcore user.
Even if it's not what the average user might be directly interested in it
may just get his creative juices flowing.
AW seems to want to imitate the IBM/Clone User magazines. "What the new
XYZ spreadsheet is all about- Counting past two!" Please- don't. My direct
experience is that the average Amiga user, other than the Games-type, is
highly computer literate or not afraid of becoming so. Most are not
single-tracked to one specific discipline, but have at least a passing
interest in everything the machine offers. I doubt that a Video intensive
person is not at all curious as to what the latest game is like, or what
neat, new music software is capapble of doing, or if the newest DTP program
supports importing EPS with preview or, better yet, how they can be best
used and tied together to do wonderful things.
Hints, tips and techniques are always welcome. But _please!_ no more
"What the Shell is it all about?" unless it's something that's _NOT_ in the
user manual. Assume a reader that has at least possesion of the WB manual
and is capable of reading it. Telling a reader where to look is perfectly
alright. Reprinting the chapter with copious annotations is a bit too
much, though; especially if it's done every three issues.
