John,
I don't believe there should be a "blanket policy" of comparing commercial
to PD, but, when the PD product is extremely strong when compared to the
commercial product, it should mentioned as an alternative to the commerical
product (ie, VLT and JRComm as compared to anything on the commercial
market). However, this is not a perfect world and is not likely to happen
on a consistant basis because editors are concerned with the bottom line —
if they recommend a PD/shareware product, or just generally pan a
commercial product, they will conceivably lose an advertiser. Personally I
don't subscribe to any of the Amiga mags (I used to buy AWTJ off the shelf)
because I can't believe what is written. Reviewers and columnists, in
general, just have too much self interest to protect, revenue to protect,
or axes to grind for me to find them believable and accurate. Or in some
cases (William's reviews for AW come to mind), just plain incompetency.
