Collectively, I believe the subscribers give more revenue to the magazines than do the advertisers. Surely they must make more on subscription and newsstand sales for the mags than they do a monthly run of advertising. If this is so, then your argument swings about 180 degrees to the real customer, the subscriber. Your final point says: "Finally, consider the coverage of a PD product. What do they get from that? The vast majority of the time, it serves the readers (certainly this is the nominal reason WE like to think of for any magazines existance) but will not provide income to the magazine…" How does a review of ANY product, commercial or otherwise, give INCOME to a magazine? Are you saying that if a magazine reviews, say, Imagemaster, then they get paid by Black Belt for doing so? I sure HOPE that's not what you are trying to say. I don't understand that particular argument.
