It's been some time since I looked into it, but there are other games in
town aside from SFQL. NISO has a successor to the Z39.50 standard that was
in progress (I don't know the current name), and it looks pretty good.
I believe that the descriptions, software and quite a few existing servers
are on the internet, I'd check with folks involved in the 'WAIS' project…

As for Full Text Retrieval software, the best thing I've seen (and the
least labor intensive) is the software from Personal Library Software in
Rockville, MD. Their software is multi-platform, (DOS, Windows 3.x, Mac,
VMS, UNIX) and is in use on a number of CD's.
