Hi John. We make custom SIMMs for a few reasons, obviously one of them being to sell them of course, but there's more to it than that. With traditional SIMMs one must usually add them 4 at a time, due to their memory organization. Our SIMMs are 32 bit wide meaning they can be added one at a time on our 32 bit accelerators. Also, "generic" SIMMs actually vary, and so to ensure the best reliability and lower the number of unknown factors involved in the running of an accelerator, we decided to make our own. I also want to point out that we don't abuse the fact that the user must use our SIMMs either, as we try to remain competitive with "standard" SIMMs. At the World of Commodore show, I saw GVP 4MB 60ns 32 bit SIMMs going for $179 which is comparable to the best PC prices I see.
