The problem is that at the 80486/68040 junction, Intel started to really get aggressive with the clocks. Add in the fact that the '040 was late and Intel ended up pulling ahead with higher clocks. At the same clock the '040 was nicer than the '486, but the '040 has not even come close to getting to 66Mhz, much less 100Mhz. The '060 is not really ahead of the Pentium. It's cheaper (1/2 the price), but is very close in overall speed at similar clocks. It's the '040 story all over again! The '060 is _late_ and has a very slow clock. 50Mhz, that's not much to brag about. 90Mhz P54C chips from Intel are out now, 100Mhz by the end of the year. '060 will barely get to 66Mhz by then. PowerPC601 should be near 135Mhz by years end. As usual, they have a killer chip a year late. 🙁 Let's hope that at least PowerPC makes a dent in the Intel empire.
