<< I think Autodesk got lazy with release 4. >>
I think you're missing the big picture. What in fact has happened is:
They managed to put out an interim product << with a few great plug-ins thrown
in >> as you said, ** while simulataneously developing the next generation s/w
in rel.5 ** I find this parallel development to be rather good for the user
base. I suppose some people can just look at as rel.4 not being what they
expected for what in fact will be rel.5. Of course, this *did* allow the user
base to get even more powerful s/w 1 or 2 years earlier. Not to mention the
release costs less and came earlier than ever before. It's all just how you
look at it. When rel.5 ships, I imagine your view in retrospect, may be
different.
<< A new-comer has beaten Autodesk to the NT marketplace as well as to the
Alpha and MIPS machine. >>
I didn't know there was a race <g>. Actually, the first app's to appear on a
platform (historically), usually don't end up dominating in their field.
Until the dedicated h/w assisted RT rendering cards are in the pipeline, I
don't think we'll see too much of a leap foward from anyone. Rel. 5 probably
will come along at just the right time….not too early, not too late IMO.
